In the summer of 2014, Daesh swept out of the chaos the occupation had left behind, took Mosul, and drove toward Baghdad, Erbil, and the holy shrines of Najaf and Karbala.
While the world deliberated, Iran answered first. Within hours, Iranian weapons, advisers, and commanders were in Iraq, led by Qassem Soleimani.
The Shrines Defended
The shrines were defended, the takfiri wave was broken, and by 2017 Daesh's state was destroyed.
In January 2020, America assassinated Qassem Soleimani at Baghdad airport on the order of Donald Trump. Ayatollah Khamenei wept over his coffin and promised a harsh revenge. Days later, Iranian missiles struck the American Al Asad base in Iraq: the first open missile strike on an American base since the Second World War.
He named Soleimani a living martyr of the Revolution. The commander's path, and its ending, foreshadowed his own.
